I tried to use light therapy to fight acne in the past, but the device I got died untimely death just as I started seeing the first benefits of the treatment. My old device was in a shape of a wand and I had to hold it against each area of the face for 4 minutes, so the whole treatment took ridiculous amount of time.

The Neutrogena mask treats the whole face at the same time, except for the area around the eyes, which is covered by protective glasses. The device comes with an activator, which is essentially a battery case with batteries, timer and a counter. When you use it 30 times, it would not work any more and you need to buy another activator. The mask is held on the face by protective glasses. I wear glasses, so I had to remove them for the treatment, and be blind for 10 minutes. Audiobook to the rescue. The frame is stiff and the temples are stiff and thin, and dig into the flesh furiously, so I have to move them up and hold one of the temples, otherwise it was just too painful.

The light is quite bright, even through the slightly colored glasses, and it does produce some mild heat. They mention possible side effects – mild redness and tingling. I did not experience redness so far, but the device seem to cause some tingling sensation and warmth at the end of the treatment and for some time after.

The mask comes in a very sturdy cardboard box that can be used to comfortably store it.

Not a fan of the product, it’s use and long term cost in replacement hardware., October 30, 2016

I will have to update the review as time passes to determine is effectiveness. The package comes with a plastic dual layer mask that has built in pink/blue led lights. A lightweight eyeglass frame with a thin yellowish shield is in place to protect the eyes. The mask itself has a cutout in the center allowing you to see out when not in use. Here are my initial impressions.
Construction: the plastic construction is delicate and feels as if it will easily break/crack upon impact if accidentally dropped or flexed. A wire is attached to the bottom right of the mask connecting it to the external battery pack. This is another area of concern since the wire can easily be pulled out with moderate force. The external battery pack feels well built. Powered by 4 aa batteries preprogrammed for only 30 treatments.

Functionality: when powered on the bright LEDs are overwhelming. It’s almost impossible not to scrunch your eyelids shut since the light itself is so bright. Even with your eyes forcefully closed, the brightness is very difficult to endure. Ten minutes seems like an eternity. After the initial use I immediately started seeing spots and now have a minor migraine. Hopefully there are no long term negative effects from that bright light exposure. Even though each session lasts only 10 minutes, I’m already questioning whether this is worth the negative experience.

Design: in hindsight, im not sure what the benefit of having the cutout and shield provide. When the light is on, it is literally impossible to keep your eyes open. The bottom on the shield could also benefit from some vents since the heat from your breath makes the experience more uncomfortable.

Overall, at the moment, I’d personally pass on this for a few reasons. First was the negative after effects from the bright light. Secondly, is the preprogrammed 30 treatment external power pack that needs to be replaced. As a early adopter, you are investing in a product that you hope will continue to be supported. Since success has not been established, this could easily be another product with a short shelf life, in which case you can say bye bye to your money. Any product that requires replacement hardware to work after every 30 treatments means additional waste to the environment. Profit over practicality.

This light & therapy unit has made my skin feel much smoother after three uses. My skin wasn’t terrible before, but it has annoying bumps that aren’t all acne, but still a nuisance. I’m assuming the more I continue using it the better my skin will look and feel, because with each use it’s noticeably improved my skin. So far very happy with it, and the price seems very much in line with the performance.

It’s easy to use and convenient. I like the size of it, not too huge it doesn’t store easily. It performs slightly better than a lot of masks I’ve tried, and doesn’t leave my skin feeling itchy like some of those do. Would be a great gift for women of pretty much any age, a good solution for skin issues from bumps to acne.
